The tarantula takes its name from the town of Taranto the principal town of Apulia, near where the spider is found.

  As you already know tarantulas are large they do not build traditional webs like other spiders but they hunt or lie in wait for the prey to come walking by, they catch their prey super fast and inject the insect or prey with toxic venom from their fangs which is non lethal to man.

In days gone by in Apulia, there was a disease called “tarantism” which spread rapidly through this town.

When people got this disease known as tarantism, it caused them to have a sudden urge to get up and dance in a wild and fast turning motion

Though strange it might sound or seem, one of the reasons for getting up and dancing seemed to do with the perspiration getting the illness out of the body. The world famous tarantella that is practised in Italy comes from this disease.

Many people in this town thought that the big spider was the cause of this disease which they became known as tarantulas years later, we can only imagine how this would have cause people to kill tarantulas and even kill them throughout southern Europe. Many people in this town believed that if you were somehow bit by this spider you would be cured if you did the dance.

Helpfully, Kircher who was a doctor back then depicts the region populated by the spider, and gives two drawings, the underside and top. Back then and unfortunately had you thought you had been bitten by a spider this doctor who was well known for his work would have suggested that you dance the venom out your body, im not so sure this would have worked these days!

This is one thought of why we use the word tarantula today, and that is that it came from this part of the world.
