The origins of tattoos in Maori mythology are said to have come from the lord of the underworld, in a story about a love affair. This love affair was between a young man named Mataori and a prnicess of the underworld named Niwareka. As the story goes, the lovers argued one day and Mataori beat Niwareka, who fled from him back to her father’s kingdom in the underworld, called ‘Uetonga’.
Mataora was filled with a terrible regret and shame, and followed his lover into the underworld, where he had to overcome many gruelling challenges and tasks. Before he finally arrived in Uetonga. But when he arrived he was so bedraggled in appearance from his challenges that his wife’s family mocked him. His face paint and clothes had been detroyed. Mataora begged for along time the forgiveness of his lover, and after a while Niwareka forgave him. Before they returned to the surface world Nwareka’s father, lord of the underworld, decided to teach Mataora the art ot tattooing.
