Tattoo laser removal–do what? Ok, ok, I know a lot of hard core tattoo fans are going to balk at the idea of going and seeing someone about getting a tattoo removed. But for the rest of us who, may have had a wild side growing up and got a tattoo but now, think that it doesnt fit our personality or lifestyle or whatever reason, tattoo laser removal is an option. I remember a few years back a comedian, sadly, I cant remember their name, who joked about a lady getting a butterfly tattoo on her breasts that turned into a condor after years of a sagging bosom.
Why Get Tattoo Laser Removal Done?
People choose to get tattoos removed for many reasons. In some job markets, it can be a little difficult to find a job with a mega-death flaming skull of Satan on the side of your neck. While tattoos are gaining in popularity in Japan, they still have an association with the Yakuza and people sporting tattoos are often denied entry into public baths and pachinko parlors. I have one friend, an English teacher who suffers through the hot and humid summer months in long-sleeve shirts because his arms are covered in tattoos. People trying to get out of gangs can also often choose to have tattoos, especially gang-related ones removed. Finally, a lot of people just have buyers remorse, after getting a tattoo.
How Laser Tattoo Removal Works.
Normally, the human body is able to expel foreign particles that get into the skin but with tattoos however, the “ink” is too big and so in effect it’s permanent. With laser tattoo removal, a laser (big surprise right) is used to shatter the pigment into fragments small enough for the body to eject. The lasers also come in different colors because some laser colors are more effective on certain pigments versus other laser colors. Just to give you an example, red pigment is most affected by a green laser.
A Typical Tattoo Removal Session–What to Expect.
This is the hardest part for most people. Laser tattoo removal takes a long time, isn’t cheap and hurts like hell. But if you’re really serious about getting rid or your tattoo, think about the end result rather than the road you’ll need to take to get there. Time–expect to go through a minimum of three sessions and in most cases around twelve sessions before your tattoo is “removed.” Each session will generally cost between $150 to $300 dollars depending on where you live. And then there’s the pain, which means that most people find the procedure painful enough that they choose to use a pain-numbing cream or even go so far as taking a shot to control the pain. But like I said before, focus on the end result!
Caring for Your Tattoo Between Treatments
Just like when you got your tattoo, there are a few things you’ll need to do to take care of your skin in between sessions. After each sessions, it is very likely that you’ll have some swelling, redness, and/or bleeding. It’s also likely that your tattoo will become crusty. Usually, your clinic will suggest using an antibiotic ointment like Neosporin. The ointment will help to prevent infection as well as help to keep the tattoo from scarring.
Are There Any Complications to Tattoo Removal?
Finally, there are some complication to having tattoo laser removal. Are you surprised? Well like I mentioned above, it can cause scarring. Another complication is burning of the skin. The laser that are used for targeting dark pigments may be just as effective on the bodys natural melanin, the pigment of the skin that causes freckles, or is dominant in black and hispanic people. The point is that black and hispanic people, especially, run the risk of skin becoming lighter in color at the removal site. Likewise, some pigments like yellow, can become darker after a tattoo removal session.
The Final Word
A Harris Poll dated February 12th, 2008 noted that 84% of the participants had no regret about getting a tattoo. The other sixteen percent that regretted their tattoos said the reason why was being too young when they got the tattoo. For that sixteen percent or you if you’re like them, tattoo laser removal, despite the effort, expense and pain, may be money well spent.
