Initially, tattoos were identified with prisoners who spend long years in jail. However, in recent years, more and more people are having their skins inked and in different parts of the body as well. Head, neck, arms, shoulders, chest, abdomen, the behind, legs, knees, ankles, and the list go on. The clamor for tattoos is so huge that tattoo artists have to take on apprentices to help them in their business.

But then, there are also the “inked people” who choose to have their tats removed, thus, enduring another long set of healing for the skin. Not to mention the painful process of actually having them removed.

Laser surgery is the best option to have the tattoos removed, but it takes weeks before the skin completely heals, much more, tattoo removal doesn’t happen in just one or two treatments.

Depending on the size of the tattoo, the pain or healing process and potential risks also varies.

To get rid of small tattoos, you need about five laser treatments for the tattoo to be completely removed. It may seem like an easy task, but in reality, you have to wait a couple of weeks before each treatment is performed. When the tattoo is removed, some white spots develop around the tattooed area, thus this is not advisable for dark-skinned people.

Similarly, removal of bigger sized tattoos requires longer periods of treatment and the downside is, the longer you have to tolerate the pain. In addition, there may even be cases where severe swelling may occur due to the size of the area being treated.

Colored tattoos are treated differently. Removal of colored tattoos requires the longest period of waiting since different laser equipment will be used for each color. Pain will be more unbearable, thus, you need to have localized anesthesia to endure the pain.

Among the types of tattoos, the easiest to remove are the black tattoos primarily because you will only need a laser equipment to remove the color. Lightly inked tattoos fade easily and leave an itchy feel to the wound. This is a normal skin reaction and the itchiness diminishes as the wound heals.

Tattoo removal is said to be more painful than the actual inking process. So, before having yourself inked, think twice if you plan to have the tattoo removed or updated in the future – unless you are willing to endure the pain again.
