Getting a tat is a serious business, as it is more than likely that it will be with you for life; hopefully so anyway. As such, it is something that shouldn’t be rushed into but, having decided to go with it; part of the fun is choosing which tattoo designs to consider. Here are few tips to help you make the right decision.

There are a limitless number of tattoo designs of course and each one will be individual to its wearer anyway. But often the best way to get exactly what you want is to design it for yourself. It doesn’t particularly matter if you are artistic or not; a rough sketch will do and a reputable tattooist will be able to guide you.

In any case, working closely with the artist that will be tattooing you is always a good idea. It helps build up a rapport of course, allows them to understand exactly what you are after and, they can be there to guide and advise you. However, don’t let them lead you; be your own person and make decision for yourself ultimately.

Quite often, it can seem the easiest thing to just go along with a common design. There are countless flowers, butterflies or the ubiquitous heart with a romantic connotation to it. And these are fine as far as it goes, but only if they are what you really want to say.

A good tip to help get the right design is to have a temporary tattoo. Henna tattoos come off after a few washes, so will not be permanent; using them as guides will allow you to really formulate what works and what doesn’t.

Selecting between tattoo designs is not easy and needs time and thought. But once you are settled with your choice, then all you need is to select where to have it done. Perhaps that is a lesson for another day.
